The "Good Empty"
Just a few days ago I had a thought while driving my car. For a few months now my dashboard was lit up by various warning lights. A plethora of problems flashed before me. yellow lights signalling imminent threats. So a few days ago I went to the garage and got it fixed. On my way home it was dark out, and I visibly noticed the absence of the lights. Like there was something that was visibly distinct about my quiet dash. I looked good, in a way I hadn't seen in a long time. I figured it might be what I called: "good empty." Some things have this "bad empty" feel to them. School hallways after dark, shopping malls vacant, and others (just turn to the internet's passion for subliminal spaces). But if there are spaces that look creepy, bad, or very uncanny when they are empty. There must be those that look peaceful, good, and purposeful. I think about pools. There is something to an empty pool. Not like the closed-in water-parks you see in those subliminal space videos. But just a regular pool. A crisp rectangular pool in the sunlight. Seeing it clear and empty. To me feels right, it feels good. I am sure there are lots of examples, but those are what have come to me.
